The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) was known only from fossils until discovered in a remote part of China in 1941. Seed was collected in the late 1940's and distributed to botanical gardens around the world, including the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco CA, where this specimen was photographed.
